Well, here is the theory…
The best links to your site are one-way links from sites with high Page Rank, and these are not always easy to come by - no one wants to give you anything for nothing, right? 
However, these high PR sites achieve and maintain that high PR by having good content. There is also a need to expand and refresh that content on a regular basis. They are always looking for good material, and many will use good articles to inform and/or entertain their visitors. Articles are like any other media - subject to copyright, and as trade-off for free use of the material, users are required to acknowledge the source.
This is usually by way of an “Author’s Note” - a 200 character outline which gives you the opportunity to specify your name, email and URL - effectively, when the article is published this serves as a ”free” one-way link to your site!
